How to install the wire thread insert correctly?

Installing wire thread inserts, also known as helicoil inserts, correctly and quickly requires careful attention to detail and the use of the right tools. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you install wire thread inserts:

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

1.Wire Thread Insert Kit: This typically includes the inserts, installation tools, and a tap.

2.Drill: To create a hole in the material you want to insert the wire thread into.

3.Tap Handle: To thread the hole with the tap.

4.Thread Inserting Tool: This tool helps you insert the wire thread into the hole.

5.Threadlocker (optional): To secure the wire thread insert in place.

Installation Steps:

1.Select the Correct Size: Ensure you have the right size and type of wire thread insert for your application. The insert should fit snugly in the hole without any play.

2.Prepare the Hole: a. Drill a hole in the material to the recommended diameter and depth specified in the wire thread insert kit’s instructions. b. Make sure the hole is clean and free from burrs or debris.

3.Thread the Hole: a. Use the tap from your kit to create threads inside the hole. Make sure the threads match the size and pitch of the wire thread insert. b. Use cutting fluid or lubricant to ease the threading process and extend tap life. c. Tapping should be done carefully and slowly to avoid damaging the threads.

4.Install the Wire Thread Insert: a. Thread the wire thread insert onto the insertion tool provided in your kit. b. Place the wire thread insert with the tool into the threaded hole. c. Turn the tool clockwise while applying gentle downward pressure. The wire thread insert should thread itself into the hole.

5.Break Off the Tang: a. Once the wire thread insert is fully installed, it will have a tang (a small protruding piece). b. Use a pair of pliers or a tang break-off tool to snap off the tang. Ensure it breaks off cleanly.

6.Optional: Apply Threadlocker: a. If your application requires additional thread locking, apply a suitable threadlocker to the external threads of the wire thread insert.

7.Check the Insert: a. Ensure the wire thread insert is flush with or slightly below the surface of the material.

8.Test the Insert: a. Verify that the fastener you intend to use with the wire thread insert fits properly and securely.

That’s it! You have successfully installed a wire thread insert. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions provided in your kit for specific details and recommended torque values. It’s essential to perform this process with care and precision to ensure the inserts work effectively in your application.
